Our Education system is lacking behind from a high level of students leaving school without having mastered required knowledge with inadequate funding from the government.
Over the last decade West African countries has implemented series of Reforms in the Educational system bringing their education speeding up to international standards. But in reality, it’s not fostering high quality of Education.
Our Education system is lacking behind, from inadequate infrastructure, to old fashioned teaching methods, and a high level of students leaving school without having mastered required knowledge with inadequate funding from the government.
Communication is one of the main problem in the West African educational system and the rest are:
- Unqualified teachers
- Old fashioned teaching ways
- Inadequate infrastructure
- Inadequate funding
Communication is paramount In Education, and it’s channeled through different means. Teachers and lecturers work out the effectiveness of their lectures with projects or questions in order to get feedback. I.e, written, verbal, non-verbal.
Just of recent, a story of a Ghanian teacher that didn’t know how to pass his message across to his student was widely spread on social media. This embarrassing/old fashioned teaching method that he used to address his students was a result of inadequate technology to communicate.
In 2015, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ranking of 76 education systems around the world, ranked Ghana the lowest.
Any successful system of Education knows communication is one of the key important factors of learning, especially west African countries that practices both monolingual and multilingualism: Whereby an average educated West African can speak up-to three languages, however, the mother tongue isn’t the official language. This comes with its disadvantages, devaluing the mother tongue which often causes lack of knowing how to get the point across and to comprehend lessons been taught.
It is fairly known West Africa is a region with a very high linguistic diversity, with an estimate of 200-1000 languages.
The effect goes far into the Educational system making students leave school without having mastered required knowledge.
“A child that’s brought up with the native language will be lost being taught in the official language”, unless brought up bilingual.
People from minority communities are affected the most with the highest rate of parental illiteracy and have little to no idea on what their children is learning.
Women make up two thirds of illiterate adults in the world, majority of these women live in West Africa.
The deficiency in the education system attracts unskilled workers, Where teachers cannot communicate their abilities, this creates difficulties in the lessons being taught and in forming relationships between students and the lecturers and to get most out of the education. We need better trained and qualified teachers.
Old fashioned teaching ways
Students still widely study in the old fashioned teaching ways where the traditional “chalk and talk” method still been used. Lessons should be taught in a completely different angle, more focus should be on the individual students needs, and using spaced learning approach.
Focusing on quality learning, the environmental and school infrastructure affects learning through flexibility of the learning space that is able to meet educational needs effectively which will encourage all type of people, especially those with special educational needs and flexibility in the use of new technologies.
Adequate funding for teachers training, school construction, school governance, physical structure should be implmented. Inadequate Funding threatens the future of millions of children. The level of the infrastructural development is very poor.
As common sense suggest, Money is important for Educational outcomes.
